CAPENVI (Environmental Capacity) Research Project funded by BPI France

Further information Further information

Research project funded by the I-Nov program on the issue of environmental carrying capacity of a tourist site. This project builds upon our previous research funded by CNES on carrying capacity. The CAPENVI project aims to provide a precise indicator of a territory's tourist capacity to manage the impact of mass tourism.   The number of tourists a territory can accommodate is calculated using three environmental indicators:
  • Air quality,
  • Pressure on water resources,
  • State of biodiversity, with a focus on trampling impacts.
These indicators are then cross-referenced with tourist attendance data from sources like Eco-compteur and FluxVision. The aggregation of these three indicators results in our CAPENVI environmental capacity indicator, providing crucial information on a tourist site's ability to sustain high visitor numbers.
