Project in Chad for the World Bank

Further information Further information

This is a project call issued by the World Bank aiming to assess the potential of tourism and ecosystem services in the Ouadi Rime Ouadi Achim (OROA) nature reserve and its surroundings in Chad.

The objective is to contribute to a better understanding of ecosystem services in the area with a view towards potential commercialization. This could support the long-term development of the Chadian economy and the preservation of biodiversity in this protected zone. The project seeks to identify tourism opportunities and ecosystem service payments (such as carbon sequestration in soils/forests or biodiversity) that could generate revenue for additional investments in the OROA wildlife reserve and surrounding areas.

Murmuration is collaborating on this project with Flockeo, a platform created by Murmuration that brings together tourism professionals committed to sustainable tourism worldwide. Through this partnership, Murmuration provides valuable local support to ensure the project's success. The role of this local partner includes identifying relevant stakeholders in the ecosystem services and tourism sectors, conducting interviews with them, and organizing site visits.

Within the consortium, Murmuration provides environmental data on:

  • Vegetation and soil conditions (including carbon sequestration),

  • Water reserves to evaluate ecosystem services,

  • Climate change impacts and infrastructure (touristic, mobility, etc.) to assess the long-term tourism potential of the area.

The ultimate goal is to assist the OROA reserve in developing sustainable tourism that respects biodiversity, including the calculation of a carrying capacity threshold based on environmental indicators.
