Urban Square Project funded by the European Space Agency

Further information Further information

As part of the Destination Earth program, UrbanSquare is a project funded by the European Space Agency to create a tool dedicated to assessing urban climate risks such as urban heat, flooding, storms, sea level rise, air pollution, infrastructure deterioration, and increased resource demand.

Within the consortium, Murmuration is working on two of these use cases:

  • Urban Heat: An indicator of heat exposure that identifies heat islands in the area of interest. It is calculated from ground surface temperature data, air temperature, and land use. Beyond providing historical and near real-time perspectives, the tool also offers prospective scenarios to evaluate the impact of climate change on urban heat islands.

  • Air Quality: Historical and current analysis of air pollution in a territory according to World Health Organization (WHO) standards. The tool relies on Murmuration’s 1-km super-resolution model, enabling neighborhood-level analysis.

Murmuration is developing these use cases with a local user, Toulouse Métropole, which has been active in implementing solutions to combat extreme heat waves and air pollution. Toulouse Métropole is interested in the co-design of demonstrators to extract the maximum relevant information from satellite imagery.
